Managing without power?
Power - a nebulous, often sought after and sometimes feared abstract idea - permeates life.

It enforces rules, governs behaviour and oversees all areas of social group habitation, and most commonly and keenly felt in the working world.

But how do we define power exactly? Is all power the same? And how do power and leadership entwine and affect each other?

But did you know each and every one of us can manage without needing power?
Claude Steiner in his "The seven sources of power: An alternative to authority" article suggests that instead of focusing on power as something the few hold over the many, we need to instead view it as the capacity to produce change flowing from seven different sources.

Grounding = the ability to stand your ground, to be rooted and to be comfortable.

Do you know what you stand for? Are you grounded, physically, energetically? Can you give space and take space from your personality and individuality?

Passion = the power to create, to recreate and to transform, producing change.

What fire inside you leads to movement, inspiration, vitality, innovation and fun? How catching are you to others?

Control = this not about competition or beating others but merely being in full control, or as much as possible, of yourself, your thoughts and your actions.

How do you deal with emotions: can you recognise them, can you express them in words? Are you able to control your emotions without denying them? How do you deal with boundaries?

Love = the power to nurture, to heal, and to instill hope. To love yourself is the highest power of all and one that cannot be dimmed or diminished by anyone or anything.

How empathic are you? Are you able to look at yourself and others with mild eyes? How do you deal with closeness and distance?
Communication = essential for effective and satisfying relationships, for transmitting knowledge, and for problem solving. Clear and open communication creates strong teams and relationships that last and endure.

How clear, open and direct do you communicate? Do you communicate values and connection? How inclusive is your communication? Are you aware of your effect on others?

Knowledge = science, intuition, wisdom, and vision. Each of these is important to help build awareness of ourselves and of the world.

How do you connect different sorts of knowledge: information, intuition, experience, vision? Do you use wisdom, for yourself, for others, for a bigger whole?

Transcendence = derived from being one with the universe. This gives us the ultimate power of being able to "rise above" situations, maintaining our thoughts and sense of power regardless.

Do you surrender to something bigger than yourself? How calm can you be in a stressful context? Can you place things in perspective without becoming detached?

So how does the thought that power isn't something that is earned or awarded and is something we all naturally possess and are born with land with you?
